Happy Autumn!! Last Friday was the first official day of Fall 2017 and I’d be lying if I told you I wasn’t beyond elated. I truly tried to enjoy summer this year. I told myself that I’d live in the moment and embrace every sunny day of the season. I wouldn’t complain about our nearly non-existent spring this year or curse summer for bringing us far too many scorching days. However, as we experienced more than our fair share of 100+ degree weather and one can only remove so many articles of clothing while still maintaining some sense of decency, I’m over it. Bring on the sweaters and scarves and all pumpkin everything!! If you’re having a hard time saying goodbye to summer, I’m sincerely sorry but I’m just so happy that autumn is finally here! As such, here are TEN things that are making me happy about this new season. Let’s take a look…
1 | Autumn Weather
As I type this, we are experiencing yet another 95+ degree day BUT last week L.A. blessed us with a few days of gorgeous autumnal weather complete with cool breezes and perfectly painted clouds across our skies which gives me hope that sweater season – and the actual end of summer – is on its way. That said, I’m extremely grateful for our California climate especially with so many natural disasters having occurred recently. It’s never lost on me that we’re so very lucky to live where we do and my heart goes out to everyone in Puerto Rico, Florida, Texas, Mexico and beyond.
2 | Being Plant-Based
A while back, I wrote a post about being “vegan-ish” which explained why I wasn’t fully committed to a plant-based diet. To sum it up, I didn’t like to piss people off with the laundry list of things I “can’t” (read: choose not to) eat as a vegan, I still enjoyed cheese and it was honestly more convenient to just eat dairy and eggs rather than refuse meals from others or cook something solely for myself. None of that sat well with me on an ethical level though so on August 21st, I went plant-based for real, for real. It’s still been a little uncomfortable having the “I can’t eat that” conversation but I feel better about what I’m putting in my body and, more importantly, what I’m doing for our planet.
3 | Back to School
Ella and Hendrix are currently in class as I write this and, for the first time in maybe ever, I’m actually happier with having them in school rather than at home. That may sound a bit harsh but that’s coming from the woman who cried (whilst no one else did I might add) on her daughter’s first day of middle school. Like weeped. On the way out of the school in front of everyone. To the point where the security guard standing outside loudly proclaimed, “Don’t worry – your kids are safe! We’ll take good care of them!” This year however, I’m glad they’re happily learning while I get a little more done at home and spend a lot more one-on-one time with Sadie. Yay!! You can read a more detailed account of our back to school experience in this post.
4 | So Much Music
As silly as it sounds, I sometimes forget to listen to music. This is partly because I always make an effort to play kid-friendly tunes for all the little ears in our house and partly because I’ve adopted the horrible habit of letting the TV go in the background (usually on MSNBC) as I go about my day. I’ve gotten better recently however and I’ve found a lot of old favorites I’d neglected as well as some new faves. Among them are Demi Lovato’s “Sorry Not Sorry”, Miley Cyrus’ “Younger Now” and ALL the music from Issa Rae’s HBO show Insecure which I highly recommend. No spoiler alerts but I will say I had a good cry during the season 2 finale which is testament to how well this show represents real life because I’m not a cry-at-movies/shows kinda girl. Side Note: We have this Bose Bluetooth Speaker and I absolutely LOVE it!!
5 | Instagram Stories
It pains me to admit this, but I’ve been loving Instagram Stories lately. After proclaiming – to multiple people – that I would NEVER use IG Stories (as I love Snapchat and hate the fact that IG basically ripped off their app and stuck it onto their own like a stolen sidecar), I caved a few weeks ago. It’s just so convenient because it’s all in one place and it gives you another way to engage with everyone a little more informally without messing up your IG feed/theme. So, yea, I feel like a horrible person but I’m really enjoying it and if you want to see a Snapchat sellout in action, you can follow me here. Haha!
6 | Baking + Soup-Making
With cooler weather comes warmer creations in the kitchen and I’m totally here for all of them! My quest this season is to try vegan versions of some of my favorite recipes like pumpkin pie, pumpkin cookies, hearty soups, chili and more. I’ve pinned this post from Jessica in the Kitchen which looks super promising – just look at those pumpkin waffles! I also have a little (actually huge) project that I may or may not begin on my blog late this year or early next year that involves vegan baking. I’ll keep you posted as to the status of that!
7 | Fall Farm Freshness
A trip to our local farmer’s market is long overdue for our family so that’s one thing I’m really looking forward to doing this season. I’ve actually had it scheduled on our calendar for months now and I do plan on blogging all about it when we go. Another seasonal excursion I’d like to take is a trip to go apple picking. I’ve never been and nor have the kids so I think it’d be an amazing experience for all of us to share this year. I have my eye on this farm for our first visit. Have you gone apple picking in the past? If so, how did it go?
8 | The Return of the Shows
While my beloved Game of Thrones has already wrapped up for the year, a few of my favorites are back this season including The Good Place, Empire and Stranger Things. I don’t watch too many TV shows so I’m sure I’m missing out on some good ones like This Is Us and The Big Bang Theory (I’m really behind on that one!) but feel free to comment with your must-watch list so I can get some reliable recommendations!
9 | Halloween 2017!!
I’m so happy for Halloween’s arrival next month as we’re a little more settled than we were last year around this time. Ella, being a newly ordained teenager, has requested to go trick-or-treating with her friends this year, Hendrix will be in his very first Halloween parade at school and, as for Sadie, I’m thinking about dressing her in a different costume every day (for maybe five days) leading up to Halloween just to boost the fun and festivities for her. As a family, I’d like to do our annual pumpkin patch trip along with some new activities and projects. I’ve added a couple to my new Halloween board on Pinterest if you’d like to see them!
10 | Birthdays!!
Both Hendrix and Sadie have October birthdays as do a few more friends and family members so this upcoming month (and November and December too!) will be busy in the best way. We’re going pretty low-key this year with our budget going toward gifts rather than parties for Hendrix and Sadie. Oddly enough, Hendrix came to J and I last weekend and said he wants “a birthday at home and a bike” so we may just do exactly that for each of them. Next year’s plans are already in the works for their birthdays as well as Ella’s – the ideas for which I have on a secret Pinterest board so she doesn’t happen upon them!
Those are the things I’m most excited for this season! Share yours below along with your TV show recommendations and apple picking tales! xx

The sign-up box is below and I’d be so grateful if you’d drop your name and email address in!
