Since summer has officially arrived and the window of opportunity for performing last minute crunches and crash diets has closed, we’re going to need to start loving ourselves. …Or perhaps we should be doing that all year long and make it a non-negotiable point to embrace who we are, right this very minute, even if we still hope to improve a few things in the future? And maybe whilst we’re at it we could stop comparing ourselves to others and start living our own lives to the fullest? Yea, duh. So now that we’re on the same page, let’s talk six steps toward loving yourself and your body this season and many more to come. Here they are…
Find a Swimsuit That Suits You
PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT: This is NOT about slimming, smooshing or sucking your body into submission! It’s about finding swimwear that makes you feel like your best version of you and gives you the confidence to hang by the pool, lay out on the beach and enjoy summer on your terms. Choose the pattern, colors and cut you love the most and rock the hell out of them in your own amazing way. Please don’t shy away from bright and bold to avoid standing out because you deserve to shine!
Mind Your Bikini Line
While curves – or a lack there of – won’t kill your beach body, razor bumps surely will. Annoying and unsightly, razor bumps (or ingrown hairs) can be prevented by taking certain measures whilst shaving as well as performing some post-shave aftercare. I personally use a mixture of Tylenol (acetaminophen tablets) dissolved in rubbing alcohol to keep razor bumps at bay but there are plenty of other home remedies and products available for purchase that will help you achieve a bump-free bikini area. Alternatively, be a super feminist and throw shaving to the wind. I’m all for that if you are!
Keep Your Skin Game Strong
Because we show so much skin in the summertime, a strong skincare regimen is essential to building your beach body. Make sure to moisturize all your parts, treat your skin as needed and never neglect your sunscreen routine! Doing so will ensure that your skin stays beach-ready and beautiful. My current favorite moisturizers are Jergen’s Wet Skin Moisturizer and the PINK Beach Flower Body Lotion and my go-to for blemish control is the Neutrogena Complete Acne Therapy System. In addition to using skin-promoting products, follow this next tip too…
Eat Healthy + Hydrate
For glowing skin, beach babe hair and all the energy you’ll need for all those awesome summer excursions, eat well and drink your water! Again, this is just as much about feeling amazing as it is about looking amazing. Of course, treating yourself is a summer must-do but make the majority of your meals and beverage choices healthy ones. Also, if you are looking to lose weight, healthy eating habits are step one. Exercise is a wonderful, life-giving, stress-busting thing but it’s nothing without a well-balanced diet to go with it.
Tame Those Toes
In preparation for all those sunny, toes-in-the-sandy social media-worthy photos, be sure to treat your feet. I often don’t focus on my fingernails as I do too many things around the house to keep them looking ladylike but I’m obsessed with making sure my toenails are always topnotch because it helps me feel pampered and put together. Whether you perform an at-home pedicure or head to the salon, make sure to maintain those toes on your quest toward your best beach body!
Get Your Mind Right
Last but most definitely not least, let’s talk about – you guessed it – body confidence! We all know that girl – the one who doesn’t have the “perfect” body but is somehow sexier than we could all ever hope to be. What causes this brilliant unicorn to leave the cover of the forest and prance into the sunlight? She’s figured out a simple concept with which some of us still struggle – that beauty isn’t one size fits all. Beauty is more about how you present yourself and who you are on the inside than how you look, what you wear or what anyone else on this planet thinks of you and your personal body. Love yourself and allow the amazing person you are to shine through no matter the weather!
