From the outside, blogging may seem like an easy enough hobby or career. You just write stuff and whine about algorithms, right? So wrong. In truth, an enormous effort goes into penning, promoting and maintaining your blog. Every. Single. Day. From interacting with readers and other bloggers to making sure your images are Instagram-worthy, there’s so much to do on a daily basis. So, in case you need a little reminder or a bit of direction, I’ve assembled ten items to check off your daily blog to-do list. Here they are…
1 | Write Down Ideas
Always keep your phone or a trusty pen and notepad handy in case inspiration hits. Aim to keep your post ideas in one area – be it on paper, in your phone or inhabiting its own dedicated document on your computer like mine do. Write as little as a title or as much as comes to mind whether it’s full sentences or a quick outline so you don’t forget any of the thoughts you initially had. Also, DO NOT delete your ideas. They’re always worth keeping even if you end up revisiting them a year from now and writing something slightly different but still inspired by your original idea.
2 | Promote Your Posts
There is a plethora of ways to promote your posts via social media so we’ll save the details for another day. Whatever your chosen methods are however, promote daily. It may seem like a daunting task but it’s necessary. It may also seem like shameless self promotion but it’s a common practice that ensures your amazing, awesome work won’t go unnoticed. As long as you’re not constantly flooding everyone’s feed with promos or posting only promos, feel free to put your blog posts out there. BONUS TIP: Be sure to share something different across each of your social media accounts so your readers find value in following you on every platform you use.
3 | Retweet Other Bloggers
Twitter is an excellent means of connecting with fellow bloggers and retweets are an easy, efficient and effective way of supporting them. Retweet things that resonate with you whether they’re inspirational quotes, helpful posts or something so funny you couldn’t help but spread it around. Like vegan Nutella. Quote tweeting is another wonderful way to not only share another blogger’s tweet but also add your thoughts and/or response to the conversation. Retweets and quote tweets help to make other bloggers feel loved AND add increased value for your followers in the form of content that isn’t strictly your own.
4 | Read + Comment
By far the most amazing method of showing some blogger love is reading posts and leaving a sincere, non-generic comment. Back in the early blogging days, it sufficed to make amazing content and then wait to be read. Now, with so many of us in the blogging world, it’s imperative that we support each other from within the community. And – duh – it just feels great! I cannot stress enough that reading and commenting should not be a selfish act. Always leave genuine, helpful, supportive and relevant comments and focus on building a community rather than expecting someone to comment back on your blog.
5 | Spruce Up Old Posts
If you’ve been blogging for a bit, chances are you have content from which a few cobwebs could be dusted and of which you’re not super proud. If you take it one post and one day at a time, you can certainly dedicate the minutes (or hours) necessary to swap out crappy photos, add Pinterest-worthy images, insert updated links and even reword or rearrange a few things as you see fit. I’m personally trying to edit two posts per week as that’s all time will currently allow but doing this daily would be ideal. Also, I’ve started to write up a list of ways to polish up your old posts so let me know if that’s something you’d like to see soon!
6 | Learn a Little
If you’re reading this, you’re probably well aware that A LOT goes into blogging and, to make matters even trickier, the elements that go into making an appealing, successful blog are ever-changing. This means that even if you’re a super seasoned blogger, you’ve still got something to learn. Time-saving apps and software functions, newly adjusted algorithms, the ins and outs of SEO, web design trends and photography tricks are just a few of the many things we bloggers should be habitually brushing up on. Carve a little time out of each day to absorb as much knowledge as your brain will allow and then do it all over again the next day as something will undoubtedly have changed.
7 | Take Some Photos
Awesome photo-ops are everywhere, everyday so don’t miss them! I’m going to say the thing you shouldn’t say and say I’m not a fan of stock photos. Insert “speak no evil” monkey emoji here! I’d rather see your unedited, unprofessional personal photo than an airbrushed model who belongs in a magazine. Make your blog yours by using your own unique photos. Whether it’s your workspace, flowers from your morning walk or just your feet standing on solid ground, it’s not impossible to find subjects and shots that will work for multiple types of blog posts. So go forth and photograph – daily!
8 | Proofread a Post
If your previous posts don’t require any major renovations, simply take a few minutes to proofread one past post per day. While some bloggers aren’t too bothered about writing a super fancy formal post (and that’s ok!), it’s still important to maintain a bit of professionalism by way of ensuring your posts are as typo-free as possible. We all make mistakes. The point is not to beat yourself (or anyone else) up about it but to be proactive in your quest to make your content as awesome as it can be. So sit down, read a post, correct any misspellings or grammatical errors and feel that much better about your brilliant blog!
9 | Seek Inspiration
Blogging is a subset of writing, writing is an art form and art needs inspiration to fuel its creation and further its development. As such, you’ll need to seek out inspirational experiences to keep this crazy thing of ours going. Take a hike, scroll through Pinterest, watch a documentary, try something new, dine somewhere different, read a little or even explore the ever-popular retail therapy option. Whatever you do, make sure to check out of the blogosphere for a bit, find some fantastic inspiration and bring it back with you when you return! The rest of us will be waiting…
10 | Engage + Encourage
Taking time to interact with your readers is endlessly important. Rumor has it that brands are becoming more judicious when it comes to throwing sponsorships at bloggers with large followings. In the wake of fake followings, paid-for followings and #botgate, this is amazing news for bloggers who build and engage with their authentic, organic community. Touch base with your readers on a regular basis, be supportive and reliable, and make them feel welcome because not only will it boost your blog but it will be one of the best and most beloved experiences you have as a blogger.
I hope you find this list handy and helpful! Please add to it by leaving one of your own blog-related daily to-do’s in the comments below!! Thanks for reading!
