In the past couple years, I’ve gotten into all things motivational, inspirational and even – and it pains me to admit this – spiritual. My current spiritual situation however is kinda like that scene in Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest when Tia Dalma gives Jack a jar of dirt, he questions whether it’s “going to help” so she tells him to give it back but he refuses to which she replies, “Then it helps.” Here’s the clip for reference – it always makes me laugh. Spiritual stuff is my jar of dirt. I’m not completely convinced that it has magical powers but I’m clinging to it like a cursed sea captain just in case.
While selecting a word of the year isn’t necessarily a spiritual practice, the word I’ve chosen is along those lines and I’m keeping it by my side for the next 365 days. If you haven’t heard of the whole “word of the year” thing, you pretty much choose a word that represents your preferred theme for the year ahead. And, if you’ve not yet chosen one and would like some assistance in the brainstorming department, here are some questions to get you thinking:
What do you want the next year of your life to be about?
What one quality do you want to exhibit most this year?
What do you need in your life most right now?
What would make you the most happy to accomplish in the next 12 months?
What do you want to infuse into your life (or others’ lives) in 2019?
I really love the word of the year concept because it’s super simple compared to setting strict New Year’s resolutions and it makes a firm foundation on which to build goals for the year ahead. It’s also so easy to revisit a single word – as opposed to a list of resolutions – on monthly or even weekly basis to ensure that your actions are aligned with your central theme. If you’ve already chosen a word of the year and you feel comfortable sharing it, I’d love to hear what it is and why you chose it! Here’s mine…
My word of the year for 2019 is MANIFEST!!
Around September, I realized that the past two-ish years of my life have been about making major mindset shifts rather than making any measurable achievements. Once that clicked, I became completely unapologetic (aka forgave myself and didn’t allow anyone else to make me feel ashamed) about not being wildly successful yet. I had to do big things on the inside that would allow me to do big things on the outside. I feel like I’m finally ready to play full out now and put into action all the things I’ve learned which is why I chose manifest as my word of the year.
I love words – like manifest – that can apply to different areas of life and make it easy to shift your focus as the year progresses because as we grow so do our goals. You might accomplish a New Year’s resolution in a matter of months, but a word of the year will be with you until the ball drops once again, encouraging you to implement it all year long and giving you a central something to reflect on when the year is done. I’m looking forward to seeing which goals/things – which I’ve written around the word MANIFEST in my bullet journal – I can bring into my life in 2019!
