Well it finally happened, Zachary – somebody got me an oil diffuser! And I love it almost as much as I love that State Farm “She Shed” commercial. Anyone else?! So, the oil diffuser I put on my spring Amazon wishlist earlier this year made its way to me last month in the form of a birthday present from Ella, her dad and her bonus mama. I’ve used it almost daily since purchasing some essential oils (more on that in a moment) and I’ve raved about it so much that Ella’s dad ordered one for their home also. And since I can’t seem to stop talking about it, I figured I’d share my oil diffusing adventures on here as well…
If you’re not familiar with oil diffusers or diffusing essential oils, it’s pretty much the process of dispersing natural oils – derived from things like lemons, rosemary, frankincense, etc – into the air in the form of a fine mist. In addition to dispensing scents, diffusers also act as humidifiers and (depending on the oils you use) air purifiers too. There is a wide variety of essential oils to choose from and they boast a range of purposes and potential benefits like lavender for calming anxiety and eucalyptus for promoting respiratory health. If you’re into spiritual type practices, essential oils are also thought to protect, heal, cleanse and aid in meditation.
Personally, the biggest motivation behind my desire to own an oil diffuser was having our home smell like a spa. I am all about aromas – from Bath & Body Works’ 3-wick candles to Mrs. Meyer’s cleaning sprays – so having something that provides amazing scents in a set-it-and-forget-it, kid-friendly kinda way is perfect for me. So far, my favorite oils to diffuse have been bergamot, lemon, peppermint and ylang ylang and I’ve opted for minty/citrusy in the morning or early afternoon and then the soothing/earthy scents just before bedtime. And although I’m still thoroughly enjoying summer, I’m definitely looking forward to diffusing oils like sweet orange and cinnamon for fall.
As far as the diffuser itself, I think it’s a perfect starting point for those looking to get into the oil diffusing game as it’s reasonably priced, easy to use and has great features like multiple light settings and an auto shut-off. I chose the all white design as it matches my home decor best but it’s also available with either a light or dark wood-look finish on the base. There’s also an updated edition that works with Alexa and Google Home which you can find on Amazon along with several other size/style options from the Asakuki brand. The oil set I purchased (also via Amazon) features twelve of the “top” essential oils which made it really easy for me to try out different scents and figure out which combos I enjoy most.
Like many other things, essential oils are not without their cautionary tales as outlined in this article from Health Magazine but, when used safely, they can provide an awesome aromatherapeutic experience which is what I’ve been loving about using an oil diffuser in our home. I’ll try to keep you updated over on my Instagram Stories as I continue to use my diffuser as well as test new oils. I currently have my eye on this Sleep blend from Grove Collaborative and would love to eventually purchase some of Doterra’s blends. In the meantime, feel free to check out my Homemaking + Organization board on Pinterest where I’m totally hoarding oil diffuser recipe infographics… Oops!
